Sustainability Efforts Extended with New Product: PLA Labels

In order to diversify our product offerings and further expand into the rapidly growing market for environmentally friendly packaging being demanded by consumers, Clondalkin Consumer NA, now offers a new label substrate called PLA, or Polymerized Lactic Acid, which is derived from a plant based resin, usually from corn starch, that is compostable, biodegradable, recyclable and petroleum free.

PLA is compostable and biodegradable in industrial composting conditions, but it will not degrade or disintegrate on shelves. In order to degrade, PLA must be exposed to temperatures greater than 140°F and relative humidity greater than 90% for approximately 60 to 80 days. There are many other packaging products currently on the market, including plastic bottles, that are made using PLA. Our PLA Labels will provide those customers wishing to complete their product offering with a label that compliments their PLA or other eco-friendly packaging ensemble.

“We have qualified the processes involved with printing on the PLA material and are pleased to offer this as our first “Eco-Friendly” product within our label division. In 2009 we launched our 50% recycled content PVC card for our plastic card division. This is an ongoing process as we continue to look for new products and processes that support our sustainability efforts.” – Mike Barrett, VP Business Development
